Drug Addict Goes to Church with Us!

I met L (the man in the hat) the first time my teammate Niki introduced me to Bellerive Park in downtown St. Louis. There’s only two reasons anyone goes to Bellerive: To buy or sell drugs, or to buy or sell women.

L stood out to me because he was so kind and offered to hand out flyers for the Church in the Park event taking place that weekend. He showed up to the outreach that Sunday and we spent hours talking.

Then someone told him I wrote a book. He asked if he could have a copy, and I went straight to my car and gave him the only one I had. That’s him in the photo looking at the book. And that’s me sitting next to him chatting it up with the other addicts and prostitutes.

At Bellerive, L is known as Pops, and Pops really was deeply touched by the event.

At the end of the day, we said goodbye and I told him I’d see him again. He didn’t believe me.

The next month when I was in town, I wasn’t able to get to the park, but last weekend I was! After our strip club outreach, I told Niki I was being led to Bellerive. It was nearly 1am and she’d never gone that late, but Holy Spirit was leading the way!

On a side street, we saw a group that Niki regularly ministers to, so we stopped.

Guess who was there?! Pops!! He was so surprised to see me that he couldn’t even talk.

I told him the Lord sent us there for him. That was Friday.

On Monday, I called him and he said he wanted to go to church on Thursday! Niki called and made the arrangements and she and her team picked him up last night and took him to Fire Nest STL!

I was more than ready to come home yesterday, after being gone a week, but I kept my word to be at church for Pops. His eyes were bright as I watched him watching everyone worshiping Jesus. Growing up Baptist, he truly does love the Lord. But we’ve been puzzled.

Why does he hang out at Bellerive? Something wasn’t adding up. Well, Niki got the lowdown on his drug of choice, so please partner with us in prayer for this addiction to break off of him!

I don’t minister to men often, but God is highlighting certain men right now, and is all over this story. And I’m believing for this man’s total freedom! He also reminds me of one of the most significant people in my past, so there’s a redemption story at play as well.

How good is God?! He’s absolutely AMAZING!!!!
